I'm with Sue R on making pasta in the microwave. I tried that last night and it worked great! I think the secret is the amount of water and
wonder if there is a schedule for water and pasta.

For Sandra from Oregon: For grease spots I have always had good luck with Dawn dish detergent. Just put it on and let it on until you wash again. Also good is Fels-Naptha soap for stains. I wet the bar and rub it on the stain and let it on till I wash again. Marilyn from Pa. Marie Hudson NY, and Nancy in Indiana, Shirley from Calif, Jean in NC,  onita from Stayton, OR

I'm looking for a chocolate earthquake cake recipe. I thought there had been one one here, but I can't find it. At a family reunion last weekend somebody had made one and it was good! It was in a 9x13 pan and the outside edges were chocolate and it had whitish swirls in the middle. Not sure what it was tho. I wasn't supposed to be eating anything with sugar so I didn't have a big piece. I have another family reunion the 23rd and that would be good to take. If anybody knows what I'm talking about, I appreciate the recipe.
Thanks. Sandee in West TN

Hi Nancy,
I have had to start dialysis about a month ago and I'm looking for renal diet recipes. Thanks!

Hi Nancy, furbabies and landers.

Just want to stay "Thank you" to Tona for her wonderful Pina Colada Cake that was posted back in July. I was wondering what I was going to do with the left over Pina Colada Mix I had after making some Red Lobster Pina Colada Dipping Sauce for my coconut shrimp.

My DH said it was a keeper. I told him that he tells me that on all of the recipes that Tona contributes. Tona, thanks again for the recipes.

Sandra from Oregon,
Try using cheap shampoo on the greasy stains. it works on ring-around-the-collar stains from oily hair and should work on this. Or buy the cheapest hand cleaner ( like Goop that mechanics use ), smear on the stain and wash . I have used this for years with tremendous success. It has a number of uses that are listed on the can.

Hi Nancy, Hope your move to your new home will be an easy one for you and you do not overdo. Moving is difficult and I've sure there would be a number of this group help you if possible. I made the Tropical Cream Cake that was posted by Tona on her website, it's absolutely delicious. The only cake mix I had on hand was an Orange so I used it. I'm sure some of the flavors that are in the cake was overpowered by the orange but it was still delicious. I will use white cake mix next time.

Tropical Cream Cake
Posted by Tona
1 8oz. can cream of coconut
1 cup sour cream
1 White cake mix
!/4 cup oil
1 small can crushed pineapple, undrained
3 eggs

Mix all together in a large bowl. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 cake pan and bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes. When cool frost. I used a can of vanilla frosting I had on hand and beat it, as suggested by a number of women in this group. Tona suggests a cream cheese frosting.

Thanks to all the ladies for freely giving their wonderful recipes and to you Nancy for maintaining the site.

Hi Nancy, i just love your daily emails, and really look forward to them, but I must tell you I'm an animal lover also, I have 3 dogs, 7 cats inside, and 25 cats outside that I have recued, they are all fixed, as we say neuter is cuter, we have 2 goats and 7 hens, and that's our little family.

But I do have a request, I'm looking for a recipe , Italian Water Ice , I need a recipe that I can make in an ice cream machine, 1-1/2 qt. size. I remember my Mother use to make it for my Dad. Please help!
Thanks, Diane, from the South Jersey Shore

Dear Nancy, Siggy, Ditto, & Family/Friends,

Here is a TNT original recipe of my Mom's; she made it again the other night--we think it's wonderful:

Hobo Hot Dish
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef, browned & drained
8 oz. cooked noodles
1 envelope Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1 can green beans, drained (frozen green beans work fine, too)
2 medium carrots, cut into thin 1 1/2-inch long strips
2 cans tomato soup
1 can water
3 medium potatoes, diced
1 tsp. sugar

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours or until carrots & potatoes test tender. Add more water if needed.

Shirley, Ca. wanted pear preserves. My husband who recently passed away has always made our preserves, and I watched him. So this is the way he makes his preserves:
Peel your pears, slice in this slices. Place in large pan, cover with sugar over night. (Put towel over pears)

Next morning, cook on medium heat until pears become translucent. About one hour or so. Some people like lemon slices which is optional, but we just like our preserves without. After cooking, place in jars, and water bath. Cover jars with water and boil for 10 to 15 min. These preserves are the old fashion way of cooking, but last for years.
Betty T. Ga.

The hint - use 1/2 of everything means ---
when you pour shampoo from your bottle into your hand, pour 1/2 the amount you usually do. When you squirt dish soap in the sink, squirt half the amount you usually do. You will see the same results using 1/2 the amount.

Kimchi recipe newsletter dated 8/11
How much cabbage do you use.
What kind of pepper. I know it should be a hot pepper will cayenne work?.
Thank you.
Mary H. Fairbanks, Ak

I use two large heads of cabbage and grounded red (cayenne) pepper.

I also read some where lately that a can of coke in your load of laundry with the detergent lifts oil from you laundry. And you are suppose to put a can of coke in your toilet bowl and let it sit for 1 hour and flush your stains away. I am going to try these. But it has to be COKE. It has something to do with the acid in it for the toilet and the carbonation and acid combo for the laundry.

Kathi in Virginia, about thin and crisp chocolate chip cookies, my DIL makes them like that and my son always raved about them. The only difference I could see in the way I make them and the way she makes them is that she greased the cookie sheet and cut back a little on the flour. Now I bake them that way too.

Sandra from Oregon, my husband is also prone to getting food spots on his shirts. He jokes that what doesn't make it to his mouth will soak in. LOL Funny man. I use this product called Greased Lightening. I buy it at Dollar General and it works pretty good. Just spray it on, let it sit for a bit and throw in the washer. I've only used it on washable shirts as that's all I buy for him. :)

I was glad to see the information given by Athena in De.
in the August 12th newsletter about Stevia.

Stevia has been an all natural alternative in our family and circle of friends for years. It was very comforting to know we had options.

I love this Nancy family not only for the wonderful recipes, but for the helpful tips and educational options dealing with food. Thank you so much Nancy. You're the best....

Hi Nancy, someone yesterday, I believe it was Jen, was aking about spices and their uses. I have a site I use a lot, think I got it from someone here as a matter of fact!
www.theepicentre.com
is a wonderful site to go to and learn everything about pretty much every spice there is!
Enjoy! Billie in Fl

Thank you Robbie and Chris for your help in answering my spice and herb question. I have gone to both sites that were suggested and they look like just what I needed. : ) I know my husband thanks you too, this will make me a healthier cook hopefully. I know using packaged sauces etc are not always a very healthy way to go.

Good Morning Nancy,

there are others like me that love recipes too.

As posted n the August 11 Recipes :
Here is a tip that works:
Use 1/2 of everything (toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, etc. - you will get the same results, and your product will last twice as long. This really works!!
Brenda in IN

I sure agree with this tip! I have done that with my shampoo for a very long time, and I don't notice any difference in how clean my hair is. I also use those Olay face cleansing cloths at night. They come 30 to a pack for $6.99. I cut them in half and they last twice as long and still do the job they are supposed to do.

Kathi in Virginia. Using shortening makes a crispy cookie and use of butter or

To Sandra from Oregon
Re: Food Stains
Sandra, I have a bar of Fels Naphta soap near my washer at all times. I find it is the best stain remover and inexpensive. Just apply water to the stain and rub the soap over the stain and put garment in the washer. I find it has removed all stains from my clothes with little effort. Note: I cut the bar into 4 pieces so I just have a little piece to work with and it lasts forever.
Good Luck, Maxine from Emporia, Kansas

To Sandra from Oregon regarding grease stains on clothes...  I use a product called "stain stick" You can put it on and throw it in the dirty clothes for up to a week and then wash. Every so often, I will have to repeat the stain stick, but usually works with one application. I have never had anything greasy not come out, even motor oil! It comes in an green tube with some orange on it too. Walmart used to carry it, but now i have to get it in the grocery stores.

For Sandra from Oregon on August 12th, request for getting food type grease off clothes..... try Fels Naptha. This is an inexpensive bar of soap that works wonders.
E

Sandra from Oregon requested tips for removing grease from clothes - this is a TNT method I use quite often - sprinkle grease stain liberally with talcum/baby powder (DO NOT USE A MEDICATED POWDER). Let set overnight and launder as usual. The powder will pull the grease to the top and you can actually see the powder get wet from absorbing the grease.

Thank you, Trish, for the delicious sounding "pear Honey" I'll try that on "his Majesty" and see what he thinks, Sounds good to me. Did you microwave the jars???

Chocolate Intrigue
Sift together:
3 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt.

Cream 1 cup butter, gradually add 2 cups sugar, creaming until light and fluffy.

Blend in 3 unbeaten eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.

Combine:
1 c. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Add alternately with dry ingredients. Blend thoroughly after each
addition ( low speed on electric mixer). Pour 2/3 of batter into a 10 inch
tube pan, greased on bottom.

Add to remaining batter:
3/4 c chocolate Hershey syrup
1/4 tsp. soda

Pour chocolate batter over white batter. Do not mix. Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for 60-65 minutes. Cool completely before removing from pan.

When I make the cake, I take a knife and swirl it in the cake mix. It gives it a marble effect. I don't know how it would turn out if I didn't do that. I'll have to try it and see.

I'm not sure how to get food type grease off of clothes, but I have a friend that when they went on a vacation to Europe, they sprayed their shirts with Scotch Gard Protector. On the can it says " helps repel spills and stains". It protects fabrics from sofas to silk. For upholstery, washable and dry cleanable fabrics. She said that if they spilled anything on their clothes it just wiped off with a wet rag.

Hope this helps
Emma from Montana

Comment
I remember at one time you could buy fabric softener sheets for the dryer that were treated with Scotch Guard Protector. These sheets helped a lot on stains.

For Cindy---Stainless Steel - I have an all stainless steel appliance kitchen (refrigerator, range, and dishwasher) and just love them! To clean them, first remove all visible soil with soap and water, and rinse thoroughly. Then use Johnson's Baby Oil, straight from the bottle, with a clean paper towel apply it in the same direction as the grain of the stainless steel surface. Rub until all fingerprints disappear, then let it set for a few minutes, and remove the excess oil with another clean paper towel. Then stand back as you will be amazed at how it easily and quickly it makes all visible fingerprints and smudges disappear and coats it with a new shine. Try it.

Lisa (east texas) My daughter worked for Godfathers pizza for years. She said the frosting was drizzled on after the pizza was baked and out of the oven. Hope this helps. Theresa in MI

I everyone in Nancyland!
Nancy - LOVE your newsletter and all your hard work in getting it out to us.

During the Christmas holiday, my mother-in-law would make a Jam Cake for me for my birthday (which is during the Christmas holiday). It had frosting on it; I think with brown sugar and it was cooked on the stove. About 5 years ago, my dear mother-in-law passed away. My father-in-law's new wife tried to locate the recipe, but had no luck. Does anyone in Nancyland have a tried and true recipe for a jam cake? Thanks in advance!
MarilynJ

Hi Nancy. This is in reply to Toni, SW Fl(august 11 news letter ). If you do not want your chocolate chips to sink to the bottom of your cake toss them around with some of the cake flour before adding into your batter. This does the same if you are adding raisins to your cake.
Nell, Pa

Kathi in Virginia, Alton Brown did a show on the different types of chocolate chip cookies. He showed the different recipes to get soft and crisp cookies. You can probably get the recipes on his foodnetwork show "Good Eats".
Jean in Wa

For Toni in SW Florida wondering about the chocolate chips sinking in her cake. Next time mix the chips with a little of the flour called for in the recipe and that should keep them from sinking to the bottom. Don't know why they do that! Connie in TX PS. this is also a good hint for nuts.
